Space Fighter - L.S.S. Goddard

PatrickD's Original Space Fighter Design

The space fighter was created from pieces from a number of Lego sets, most notably "Aerial Acrobats".

The cockpit of this one-man craft is comfortably designed to put the pilot's mind at ease. The designers theorized that the pilot should be thinking about his next maneuver, not the pain in his back. The controls are typical of the controls you would find in most space fighters.

On the top of the fighter, you'll find a retractable plasma cannon. It packs quite a punch. It is capable of blowing a hole in a 3-foot-thick piece of titanium that's big enough for the fighter to fly through. If needed, missiles can be mounted under the wings.
By retracting the cannon, the fighter gains better maneuverability in a planetary atmosphere. The cannon must also be retracted before the ship engages its internal warp engines.
The bottom of the craft also houses a retractable weapon.

The warp engines are located inside the ship and are not visible from the outside. This protects them from enemy attack. There is a single impulse engine mounted on the rear of the ship. Even though engines are small, the fighter can outrun most other ships.

Here we see the cargo bay. Although it cannot hold large loads, the pilot usually stores his sidearm and baseball cap in there. The fighter is not really intended for cargo missions, but a small storage area can always come in handy. There is also another access panel on the other side of the fighter.

Here is a top view of the space fighter. The cargo doors are closed and the cannon is retracted in this photo.

This particular space fighter, the L.S.S. Goddard, is named after the chemist Robert Goddard. If it wasn't for his research with rocket propulsion, our space program wouldn't be able to produce speedy vessels such as this.
